Why it works

Most slot machines are random every spin. Some aren't, and most players never check.

Some machines carry state instead:

  • a meter climbs
  • multipliers stay active
  • wilds stick around
  • bonuses build

This is called persistent state, and that state carries over to whoever plays next. Someone who doesn’t know that leaves it behind. You inherit the edge.

The best-known version is a must-hit-by progressive, a jackpot required to pay out by a set point, so the closer it gets, the better the math. The idea extends further: a hold-and-spin bonus screen left partly filled, a multiplier that persists across sessions, a meter that doesn’t reset on cashout. Fake AP machines: some machines look like persistent state but offer no real advantage. The rules screen has to disclose whether appearance affects the odds, so check it. The most common fake is the firecracker-style game: casuals play when every firecracker is lit, thinking it’s closer to hitting, but lit or not, the odds don’t change.
